Steve Silvern won prestigious academic awards in college at Cal-Berkley including Phi Beta Kappa and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and graduated from UCLA law School where he was named Rosco Pound Advocate in 1972. However, instead of going to work for a large corporate law firm or the government, Steve was determined to use his education to help regular people. He left California for Colorado in 1973 and gained experience in a small law firm and a non-profit voting rights organization, before starting this law firm in January, 1977. Steve has been involved as co-counsel in winning large trial verdicts in high-profile cases but is equally proud of the thousands of quiet, fair settlements he and his partners have achieved for our clients. He is most proud of the Nasca v. State Farm case, where we established the precedent that arbitrators who decide insurance claims must disclose their business relationships with the insurance company.
Tom Gersabeck joined Steve in 1982. Tom G., as he is known here, is from a medical family. He put that background to work as a Disability Examiner adjudicating disability claims for the Social Security Administration after graduating from the University of Michigan. He quit to go to law school and after completing it, left Michigan for Colorado. Tom has handled jury trails successfully, but for the last many years has worked full-time prosecuting Social Security Disability Claims and Appeals. No one understands the social security regulations, or medical concepts, like Tom G. All of us depend on Tom to make sure we have a good understanding of the more complicated medical issues that come up.
Kara T. Birkedahl joined us in 1986. Kara earned Phi Beta Kappa at C.U. Boulder, and a Masters Degree, before attending law school at the University of Denver, where she graduated in the top 10% of her class. Kara especially likes prosecuting workers compensation claims and has successfully guided hundreds of our clients through the complicated maze of administrative procedures in that field. Kara also prosecutes employment discrimination and breach of employment contract cases. She was co-counsel with Steve and Tom B. on James v. Coors (verdict for the plaintiff of $1.4 million) and has achieved numerous confidential settlements of tough employment cases (is there any other kind?) As one client recently put it: Working with Kara changed my mind about lawyers!
Tom Bulger (known as Tom B) has been with us since 1996 when he moved here from Philadelphia, where he had worked for a large personal injury law firm for several years. He is a graduate of Rutgers University law school (1993) and has worked for a United States District Court Judge and the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Organized Crime Division. Tom B.'s litigation skills are unsurpassed. He has been successful as sole trial counsel and also before appellate courts.
